FOR VISITORS

What you can do while you’re in the Bay and back home….

A sustainable destination develops a unique identity that reflects the diverse culture of our past, present and future.

A sustainable destination:

  • Conserves natural environments
  •  Promotes efficient use of natural resources such as water
  • Contributes to the well being of the local community
  • Complies with legislation
  •  Provides a safe, enjoyable and sustainable experience for visitors

As a visitor to our place, we hope that you will assist us to preserve the uniqueness of New Zealand through some simple, but important actions to make your visit more sustainable.

  • Seek out businesses that have committed to the principles of the Sustainable Tourism Charter. Look for this logo.
  • Take time out – the distances that we typically travel contributes to ozone depletion. Spend less time travelling and more time at each destination.
  • Protect the unique biodiversity – never take or damage the flora and take precautions to avoid disturbing the wildlife where possible. Stay on marked trials, particularly in fragile environments.
  • Reduce waste – many products can be reused or recycled. Ask for recycle disposal sites.
  •  Implement water conservation measures where possible.
  •  Respect customs of tangata whenua (people of the land) by becoming aware and acting responsibly.
