Katikati
Population: 3,460
The town of Katikati, located 20 kilometres to the south of Waihi Beach, is known as New Zealand’s ‘mural town’.
The community is passionate about art, which is evident throughout the nearly 40 murals which adorn the walls of businesses throughout the town.
Katikati is also well-known for its Haiku Pathway, which is a two kilometre walk along the Uretara River. The trail passes stones that have been carved with Haiku verse, all carefully selected by a local poet.
Katikati is also a great base for walks in the nearby Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park.
Katikati is built on the banks of the Uretara River and is fast becoming known for its summer evening concerts featuring jazz, classical and contemporary music. As well, Katikati offers a growing collection of other outdoor art. The town has plans to further this growth, with open air art, more murals, sculptures and festivals.
With a number of accommodation options, the charming town of Katikati is a vibrant holiday destination for the whole family.
