Maori culture is alive and well in the coastal Bay of Plenty -- the culture of the indigenous Maori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of New Zealanders.

The Maori culture is seen in many facets of the region, from the sacred Mauao (Mount Maunganui) to historic Maketu.

The kiwifruit is one the most symbolic icons of the coastal Bay of Plenty, and horticulture plays a very important role in the economy of the region. Orchards are spread throughout the region and an annual festival pays tribute to the iconic fruit.

The coastal Bay of Plenty boasts a strong creative sector. The art community is growing and an increasing number of galleries, markets and shops are popping up. Locally made art is often inspired by the region’s Maori culture and scenic spots.
