Located 90 kilometres from Tauranga, Whakatane is an attractive coastal town situated on the banks of the Whakatane River. It has a vibrant retail and commercial area, which includes a diverse range of shops, cafes, restaurants and accommodation options.

Whakatane is the main base for trips to Whakaari (White Island), one of the world’s accessible live matine volcanoes. White Island is an unforgettable experience. Located 49 kilometres off the shores of Whakatane, the island is accessible by boat or helicopter.

One of the top walks around Whakatane is the Nga Tapuwae O Toi bush track, which includes pa sites of major historic significance, native forest, pohutukawa stands, coastal views, seabird colonies, forest birds in abundance, plantation forest and rural vistas.

Ohope Beach, just six kilometres over the hill from Whakatane is a major draw card for holidaymakers, with 11 kilometres of golden sand and safe swimming waters.
